Welcome to St Mary's Catholic Primary School in Swindon, and thank you for visiting our website. We hope you find your visit interesting and appreciate any suggestions you may have to improve the information we provide.
We are a thriving popular school with hard working, happy children who enjoy coming here and are proud to be part of St Mary's Catholic Parish community. Most of us went to St Mary's Playschool, which is also in our grounds, and then started in the Reception class, so we have known each other for a long time. We are always expected to do our best and aim for excellence in everything we do. Our teachers and teaching assistants are always there to help us, and if we find the work very difficult, we get extra support in the Rainbow Room.
We have an attractive building to work in, surrounded by spacious grounds in a quiet residential area. Our School was built and paid for by many of our grandparents in 1961. Our classrooms and communal areas are colourful with our work which is displayed on the walls, making it interesting for us to come to each day. We have many books and lots of equipment to help us with our learning, a well equipped library with many new titles, computers in each classroom, as well as two laptop trolleys with 30 laptops.
The Friends of St Mary's have built an agility trail next to the large playground, a quiet garden area where we can sit and talk, and a well developed conservation area with a pond and many different plants and wildlife, including newts, birds and a family of foxes for us to observe.
Whilst we are at St Mary's, we have the opportunity to participate in different educational visits to enhance our learning experiences. This present school year 2007-2008 has seen classes visiting the Natural History Museum in Oxford to learn more about dinosaurs, the Holburne Museum, Bath to "Go Greek", as well as participating in workshops at Bristol Cathedral all about creation as part of an environmental topic. Two classes are receiving ice skating lessons at the Link Centre and a golf professional has been teaching upper key stage 2 how to play golf!
We enjoy entertaining our parents and friends, with the youngest children reminding us of the Christmas story, the Year Three and Year Four acting the Easter Story and Years Five and Six taking part in a musical in July. We also present an assembly for our parents every Friday at 2.15pm.
We are an important part of St Mary's Parish, and our priest, Fr Liam comes in very regularly to see us at playtimes or celebrate Mass and class liturgies. We learn to share what we have with others, taking our Harvest gifts to neighbours, and we raise money for our school fund by taking part in activities such as sponsored walks and this money goes to CAFOD, to help children in India and also Zimbabwe.
Our parents' association, The Friends of St Mary's runs lots of fund raising and fun events including discos, Christmas and Easter Fairs, auctions, quiz nights and the Annual Summer Fete in July. The money they have raised has made a big difference to our school. We have had new windows fitted and a new entrance foyer, staff room, and offices. They helped fund our laptop trolleys, our refurbished kitchen and lots of treats for the children.
Come further into our school and gain an impression of the atmosphere and challenge St Mary's provides us with.
